LAWRENCE — Police say two people are dead after the motorcycle they were riding crashed while fleeing an attempted traffic stop early Wednesday.

The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the crash that happened at around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, at the intersection of 46th Street and German Church Road in Marion County.

According to police, a deputy with the sheriff’s department observed a 2002 Suzuki motorcycle, driven by Jeremy Conger, 24, of Indianapolis, traveling southbound on County Road 800W in Hancock County. The officer reported that Conger failed to signal a turn at the intersection of 42nd Street, and was traveling at a high rate of speed.

The deputy reported that he activated his emergency lights as he began pursuing the motorcycle in an attempt to get the man to stop. The motorcycle, which was also carrying a passenger, Jamie L. Short, 27, of Indianapolis, continued northbound on German Church Road at a high rate of speed, police report, with the deputy still a distance behind.

As the motorcycle approached the roundabout intersection with 46th Street, Conger failed to follow the traffic lanes and went straight into the center of the roundabout and crashed. According to police, Short was fatally injured at the scene. Conger was taken to an Indianapolis hospital and later died from his injuries.

The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department is still actively investigating the crash.
