Girls soccer

Dragons get shutout

New Palestine posted its third consecutive victory Monday, blanking host Franklin 3-0.

The victory improved the Dragons’ record to 8-3.

Lucy Miller gave the Dragons a lead by scoring off a scramble ball in the box after a corner kick. Victoria Crowder made it 2-0 with a free kick that rose over the wall and dipped under the crossbar. Olivia Lambdin extended the lead by rocketing a ball from the right side to the far post upper corner for her seventh goal of the season.

Crowder scored her sixth goal of the year, while Miller tallied her fifth.

Haley Weinrich and Riley Moss shared the shoutout in goal.

Marauders earn win

Mt. Vernon defeated Batesville 4-1 on Monday night.

Cleo Mills had two goals, Riley Hurst and Shay Stindle each had a goal, Rylie Pearson had two assists, Macy Wilson added an assist and Jaici Wright had six saves in the win.

Batesville was undefeated and coming off a win against highly-ranked Cathedral. Mt. Vernon is now 11-1 (5-0 Hoosier Heritage Conference).

Boys soccer

Cougars earn OT win

Greenfield-Central needed overtime Monday but got past Shelbyville, 6-3.

After the visitors tied the game at 3-3 with a final-minute penalty kick, the Cougars offense roared back to life in overtime with three goals in the two seven-minute periods.

Zack Bell had two goals and an assist, John Halvorsen, Trevor Sawyer, Jackson Findley and Derek Owen each added goals, and Noah Stranger, Tyler Murphy, Caleb Mundell and Findley added assists.

Abe Buescher got the win in net with 11 saves.

Tennis

Dragons come up short

New Palestine had a strong match Monday against No. 29 Richmond in a battle of teams ranked in District 4, with the visiting Red Devils prevailing 5-0.

Matthew True had the longest and most competitive match of the evening, falling 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. At No. 2, Carson Gavin had outstanding rallies but fell 6-0, 7-5. Trevor Darley dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision at No. 3.

At doubles, Dane Reid and Ben Blachly fell 6-3, 6-4, while Jeremy Wagoner and Ethan Haeberle fell 7-5, 6-0.

Volleyball

Dragons get sweep

New Palestine improved to 13-4 on the season Monday with a 25-20, 25-17, 25-18 sweep at Mooresville.

Kaelyn Armstrong had 10 kills and eight digs. Jesi Hall added nine kills. Sydney Robertson had 30 assists and four aces. Lydia Jones added seven kills and eight digs. Lauren Dodd had six kills. Rylie Sturgeon and Audrey VanderWall had eight digs each, pacing a balanced offensive and defensive attack.

Royals fall to Cowan

Eastern Hancock lost in three sets Monday to Cowan, 19-25, 18-25, 12-25.

The loss was the Royals second in a row. They are now 6-14 (2-5 Mid-Eastern Conference) for the year.
