GREENFIELD — The city of Greenfield has purchased the area at 1002 W. Main Street, in conjunction with the city’s Franklin Street rehabilitation project planned for next year, said city engineer Jason Koch.

The project’s aim is to improve the flow of traffic on Franklin Street between the city limits, as it is one of the only roads that crosses I-70 and stretches across county lines, Koch said.

The building previously occupying the space was vacant for some time, Koch said. Pavers will expand the road’s width up to Seventh Street, making it easier for semi drivers to turn when they reach that intersection, Koch said.

After parceling off what space they need for the project, any remaining space will be returned to market for businesses in the area, he said.

Demolition should be completed by the end of the week, but the actual road project won’t begin until next year, Koch added. Utility relocations and power lines are scheduled to be set up this fall, but motorists should only expect minimum traffic restrictions until next year, he said.
