NEW PALESTINE — Students at New Palestine High School and New Palestine Elementary were on an unexpected two-hour delay Thursday due to a gas leak concern at the high school.

Members of the custodial staff reported a smell of gas in and around the high school late Wednesday night.

Vectren gas officials were called in to do a full sweep of the high school and surrounding areas.

The source of the smell was believed to be near the football practice fields where Vectren officials had been working periodically over the past few months, district officials said.

Vectren officials were not quite finished with their sweep at the start of school time prompting the two-hour delay.

District officials were not certain if any leaks were found or repairs made, but school officials were given an “all clear” during the two-hour delay and classes started shortly after.
