Greenfield-Central and New Palestine competed in the Lightning Bolt Relays at Franklin Central, with the Cougars finishing third and New Palestine fifth. Zionsville ran away with the win, with 252 points. Franklin Central was second with 164, the Cougars had 108, Greenwood had 104, New Palestine finished with 100 and Triton Central rounded out the field with 28 points.

For the Cougars, the team of Hannah Burkhart and Joanna Flora won the discus competition with Burkhart having the 3rd best throw overall.

The team of Crystal Peterson and Ava Grass placed second in long jump with Peterson having the second-best jump of the night and Grass having a Personal Record jump.

The high jump team of Kenzie Polster and Addi Hill tied for second.

The pole Vault team of Olivia Fortner and Taylor Fortner placed third.

For the Dragons, the lone team victory came in the high jump, where Gavin Hausz and Laine Schonauer jumped a combined 12-feet,4-inches. Hausz won the high jump event individually with a leap of 6-4. Schonauer was third at 6-0. New Palestine’s boys finished third in the 4×800, distance medley and 4×400 relays.

The top performances for the Dragon girls came in the distance medley relay, as well as shot put and high jump, in which New Palestine finished second. The Dragons were third in the 4×800 and 4×200 relays and the long jump.

Baseball

Cougars split against Yorktown

Greenfield-Central split a doubleheader Friday night against Yorktown, dropping Game 1 5-0 and winning Game 2 6-3 in eight innings.

In the opener, the Cougars fell behind 1-0 in the first inning and never could get the bats going, registering just two hits. Nick Atwood and Wyatt Deno both had singles. 

In the nightcap, Greenfield-Central scored three runs in the eight inning to pick up the win and earn the split. Bradley McDowell led the Cougars with three RBIs, and Adam Hutchinson had two hits. After managing just two hits in the first game, Greenfield-Central amassed eight in the win. 

Hutchinson pitched 5 1/3 innings in the second game, striking out 11, walking one and allowing just one hit. Brady Mundell earned his first varsity win in relief, striking out four and allowing two hits with no runs.

Baseball

Royals split with Triton Central

After falling 8-3 in the opener of Saturday’s doubleheader against Triton Central, Eastern Hancock bounced back by seizing momentum early and picking up a 10-4 win in Game 2. 

The Royals were outhit 10-2 in the opener, with Easton Fields and Payton Wilkinson picking up the pair of hits. Fields also added an RBI.

In the second game, the Royals jumped ahead 6-1 after two innings and never looked back. AJ Muegge, Addison True and Ryan Burris each had two hits, while True, Burris and Andrew Knoblock each had two RBIs. Burris had both of the Cougars’ extra-base hits, with a double and triple.

On the mound, True struck out five in five innings and allowed the four runs. Wilkinson came on in relief, allowing no hits in two innings. 

Softball

Royals drop pair to Wildcats

Eastern Hancock had a rough weekend on the diamond, following up their 15-2 loss to No. 1 New Palestine on Friday with a pair of losses to Lawrence North on Saturday, 16-0 and 5-2.

In Saturday’s first loss, the game was scoreless after two innings before the Wildcats put up five, six and five runs in the final three innings. The Royals gave up 14 hits while picking up just four themselves. Rachel Jessup, Faithe Webster, Megan Bever and Bailey Stephens each singled.

In the second game, the Royals led 2-1 after six innings but allowed four runs in the top of the seventh. Webster had both RBIs for the Royals. Paige Wickard had the team’s lone extra-base hit of the day, smacking a double in Game 2. 

Dragons roar past Seymour

The Class 3A No. 1 New Palestine softball team continued its stellar start to the season Saturday, sweeping visiting Seymour in a doubleheader. The Dragons won the opener 7-2, then followed with a 19-5 victory in the second game.

In the opener, the Dragons’ powerful offense was held in single digits in the runs column for the first time, but New Palestine seized control with a three-run fourth inning to go up 5-1, and then added two more in the fifth.

Tatum Biddle’s two-run homer sparked the Dragon offense. It was her fourth of the season. Mackenzie Jones had two of the Dragons’ seven hits, including a double. She drove in two runs. Emily O’Connor also hit a double. Michaela Jones had a hit and scored a run. Ashley Prange had a single and scored twice. TeTe Hart also had a hit.

Mackenzie Jones pitched a complete game, allowing eight hits, one earned run and striking out seven.

In the second game, the Dragons exploded for 13 runs in the second inning en route to the 19-5 win. 

Prange hit two homers, giving her a team-high eight blasts for the season and giving the Dragons 33 in nine games. It was her fourth multi-homer game of the year, and her third in four days. The Dragons’ 19 runs were a season-high.

Prange was 3-for-4 with three runs and seven RBI. She has now driven in 31 runs.

Emma Tucher had three hits, two runs and two RBI. Macy Miller had two hits, two runs and an RBI. Michaela Jones had a single, a double, two runs and two RBI. Jaylin Calvert had a hit, two runs and two RBI. O’Connor had a single and two runs. Biddle had a single and scored three times. Kendal Calvert scored twice and drove in two runs. Hart had a hit and an RBI. Mackenzie Jones also drove in a run. NP had 14 hits in the victory.

Kaylea Bullock got the win in the circle, allowing three earned runs, five hits and striking out four in four innings. Miller pitched the fifth to finish the game.

Track

Royals teams each finish 4th

Both the Eastern Hancock boys and girls track teams finished fourth in a nine-team field in Saturday’s Guerin Catholic Invitational. Guerin Catholic won the boys meet with Norwell second, and Norwell won the girls side with Guerin Catholic second.

Brady Stephens was the sole event winner for the Royals boys, picking up a victory in the shot put. Blayze Sarber finished second in the 200 meters, and Skyler Shrope finished second in both the 800 and 1,600 meters. 

For the Royals girls, Taylor Stine won the 400 meters and the 4×100 relay team of Kayla Fancher, Lexi Lewman, Aly Spaulding and Chloe O’Neal picked up a win. Bailey Allen finished second in both the shot put and discus, and Hannah Gates took second in the 100 and 300 hurdles, with a third in the 200.  

Tennis

Royals finish third in MEC meet

One night after finishing fourth in the Hancock County meet, Eastern Hancock took third out of four teams in the Mid-Eastern Conference meet in Middletown on Saturday. 

Blue River Valley won with 35 points and were followed by Shenandoah with 14, Eastern Hancock with 11 and Randolph Southern with 0. 

Chelsi McMahan won in round one at No. 1 singles and fell in the finals 6-4, 6-1. Cassandra Hannemann and Kayla Huff picked up a win each at No. 2 and No. 3 singles respectively.

Both Royals doubles teams — Madison Hagan and Kalyn Edwards at No. 1 and Chloe McCarty and Bella Witte at No. 2 — picked up a win and a loss as well.

Golf

Marauders finish 18th at invite

Mt. Vernon finished 18th in a field of 22 teams in the Noblesville Bob Spacey Invitational played at Fox Prairie on Saturday. Carmel won with a 286. Mt. Vernon finished with a 369.

Freshman Sam McWilliams led the Mt. Vernon scoring with an 83. John Husar fired 90, Blake Johnson 97, Haiden Rose 99 and Johnny Hermann 104. Zach Goode competed as an individual, carding a 116.
