Marauders fall to Delta

Mt. Vernon traveled to 12th-ranked Delta on Wednesday and came away losing 5-0.

Alaina Nelson lost at No. 1 singles 4-6, 2-6. Lydia Ruegsegger lost at No. 2 singles 4-6, 2-6. At No. 3 singles, Kaleigh Helm lost 2-6, 5-7.

“Overall the gap is not that big,” Mt. Vernon coach Gabe Muterspaugh said. “Delta will not lose many matches this year. We didn’t play that great at doubles. I thought our singles were right there, and a break either way we are talking about different matches.”

Cougars get 1st win

Greenfield Central played their first home match of the season Wednesday night, topping Warren Central 4-1.

The night started out close and the Cougars found themselves down in four spots early in the first set. That would not last long, as the Cougars were able to win a few key games and gain back the lead. All five matches would finish in two sets with the Cougars getting their first win of the season.

Winners were Lindsey McCord at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1, No. 2 singles Avery Spencer, 6-4, 6-1, No. 1 doubles team of Haidyn Goodwin and Kaleigh Stephenson, 6-3, 6-1, and No. 2 doubles duo of Erin Wright and Aly Proper, 6-4, 7-5.

Local runners compete

Mt. Vernon and Greenfield-Central competed in a nine-team girls field Wednesday at the Noblesville Invitational, with the Marauders finishing seventh and the Cougars taking eight place, with 45 and 41 points respectively.

Homestead won the meet, outdistancing Lawrence Central 132 to 100.

Dragons strong in loss

The New Palestine golf team shot its best round of the year Wednesday on its home course, falling to Hamilton Southeastern 151-162.

Quinn Dobbins led the Dragons with a 37. Elijah Domogala shot 38. Matt Kelley added a 42.

“We played our best round in years yesterday and got closer to HSE than normal,” New Palestine coach Gregg Greene said. “It’s encouraging to see us making these improvements especially since the conditions have not been good all season. We are eager to play against these types and not just represent but beat them.”
