Organizations work to promote child abuse prevention

GREENFIELD — Blue and silver pinwheels sparkled in the sun, a reminder of the innocence of children and a call to protect that innocence.

Representatives from organizations dedicated to promoting child safety converged at the Hancock County Public Library this week to encourage residents to come together to prevent child abuse and protect the children who are at risk.

The annual Planting of the Pinwheels, done in recognition of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, featured speeches from Greenfield Mayor Chuck Fewell, county prosecutor Brent Eaton and representatives of organizations like Children’s Bureau Inc., the Hancock County Exchange Club and Hancock County Court-Appointed Special Advocates.

Nine students from Geist Montessori Academy performed songs on the ukulele, violin and cello as a part of the event, and children’s librarian Kitty Riley read a book, “If you Plant a Seed,” about kindness.
