Why are you running for office?

With the current assessor retiring, I want to continue to serve the taxpayers of Hancock County not just as an employee but by stepping up to the challenge of being the assessor. I want to continue the tradition of accurate, fair and equitable assessments for all properties.

What makes you a qualified candidate for the position?

I have over 28 years of experience working in the assessor’s office. The office staff made up of Hancock County residents not only sets assessed values for properties, they also process deeds, sales disclosures, business personal property returns and applications for tax exempt properties. The office also manages land records, creates new parcels when new subdivisions are created and measures all new residential construction. I have experience with all of these duties. I have also completed the course work to obtain the Level III Assessor/Appraiser designation that is required to set assessed values.

What are your top three goals for the position?

As Assessor, I will work to maintain the tradition of accurate, fair and equitable assessments for all properties, done in a timely manner to meet the mandated due dates for on-time tax billing. I will also utilize the best staff and tools available for all aspects of the office. One tool I will continue to use is a professional team to assist us with the complex commercial & industrial properties. Our partnership with them allows us the services if needed of two tax attorneys, five Level III Assessor/Appraisers, one PHD in Economics, two master’s degrees in public finance and two accountants and a wealth of knowledge and experience without the expense of having them as full-time staff. This partnership has saved the county at least $450,000 each year with the added benefit for services. I am confident that we cannot get this level of expertise for the cost of their services by bringing everything in-house. I will also continue to welcome all taxpayers to contact us with any concerns that they may have.
