GREENFIELD — The race for the Republican nomination for county recorder is between Marica Moore, the current county clerk, and Susie Morris, who has spent the last 12 years in the county assessor’s office.

Both are excited about the opportunity to lead the office responsible for recording nearly every piece of important documentation including home mortgages, military records and other historic paperwork.

Marcia Moore

As the current county clerk, Moore thinks her talents and experience would flow over nicely into the office of recorder. Since she isn’t allowed to run for re-election as clerk after serving the eight-year term limit, she decided she would try to continue to serve her community from a different post.

Prior to being elected clerk, Moore was deputy clerk-treasurer for the city of Greenfield for 16 years.

She said although it can seem a little confusing with different office holders running for new positions because of term limits, the familiarity will only help the residents of Hancock County.

“Because of the coordination of duties, it’s a benefit to the constituents because you have someone who understands the realm of another department,” Moore said. “And we know best how they can work in coordination together.”

Moore decided to run for recorder because the duties closely resemble her own duties as clerk with regard to files and preserving documents. Her experience of running an office, including administrative duties, make her the right choice in this election.

“I really believe my biggest advantage is my experience,” she said, “experience you can only gain leading an office and understanding how all of the county offices work together.”

Susie Morris

Morris started her political career back in 2000 when she was elected clerk-treasurer of New Palestine. After serving a four-year term, in 2006, she joined the assessor’s office, where she is responsible for handling business equipment taxes, data entry on tax abatement paperwork and processing deeds and land contracts.

Over the years, she’s worked closely with the recorder’s office and decided she knows enough about how the office works to seek the position this year.

“I’ve had a close working relationship with that office for awhile,” Morris said. “It sounded like a good opportunity. I’m at a point in my life where I’m ready to assume a leadership role.”

She thinks the familiarity she shares between those two offices would help the operation continue to run smoothly, should she win the nomination and ultimately the General Election in November.

Although she doesn’t have the public recognition of her opponent, Morris is selling herself to voters as a hard worker who is willing to do whatever it takes to make sure they have the best experience possible when dealing with the recorder’s office.
