GREENFIELD — A Wabash man faces a neglect charge after he was involved in a police chase with a young child in the backseat.

Carl W. Alexander III, 33, 309 W. Maple St., Apartment 4, Wabash, is being held in the Hancock County Jail on a $2,000 cash bond. He faces charges of resisting law enforcement, neglect of a dependent and driving while suspended, according to court records.

A sheriff’s deputy tried to stop Alexander in the 2700 block of North County Road 700W on March 9.

The deputy saw a driver speeding down the roadway, watching as he crossed the center line to pass a stopped postal carrier and nearly collided with an oncoming car, court documents state.

The sheriff’s deputy flipped on his emergency lights to stop the driver, later identified as Alexander; but Alexander ignored the officer, triggering a low-speed car chase, officials said.

Police pursued Alexander for more than 7 miles before he finally stopped outside a home on the northeast side of Indianapolis, court documents state.

Officers found a 4-year-old girl buckled into a car seat in the back of Alexander’s car. The child was not hurt during the pursuit, police said.

Alexander now faces one Level 6 felony count of resisting law enforcement, one Level 6 felony count of neglect of a dependent, and one Class A misdemeanor of driving while suspended.

Level 6 felony counts carry a maximum penalty of 2½ years in prison. Class A misdemeanors carry a penalty of up to a year in jail.

Alexander has pleaded not guilty to the allegations.
