Greenfield graduate earns Big 12 honor

IRVING, Texas — Iowa State freshman guard and Greenfield-Central graduate Madison Wise earned her second career Freshman of the Week honor, the Big 12 announced Monday. Wise averaged 11.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists as the Cyclones went 1-1 on the week.

Wise led all scorers in Saturday’s win at Texas Tech, tallying 17 points against the Raiders while going 7 of 13 from the field. Wise also grabbed five boards, including four crucial offensive rebounds. She also went 2-for-4 from 3-point range in the contest. In the Cyclones’ game against Kansas State, Wise netted five points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished a career-high four assists.

Wise is one of just two Big 12 freshmen to win multiple weekly awards this season.

Cougars senior picks college

FORT WAYNE — Sydney Williams has signed her letter of intent to Indiana Tech and will join the Warriors softball program as a freshman for the 2019 season, head coach Stephanie Zimny announced.

A 5-foot-7 first baseman from Greenfield, Williams is currently a senior at Greenfield-Central, where she is a four-year varsity starter for the Cougars. She helped her team win a 2015 conference championship and led the Cougars to an IHSAA Class 4A regional title as a junior. Williams has a .330 career batting average.

The daughter of Aerin and Danny Williams, she is currently undecided on what she will major in at Indiana Tech.

Hoops players earn weekly HHC honors

The Hoosier Heritage Conference announced its basketball players of the week for the week of Jan. 13 on Tuesday.

Boys Player of the Week

Zach Kuhn, Shelbyville

Kuhn had a triple-double in the Golden Bears’ 79-59 win against Columbus East with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. In the lone HHC game of the week, he tallied 22 points, seven rebounds and five assists in a 61-57 win against Pendleton Heights. He hit 14 of 24 in the two games.

Girls Player of the Week

Elizabeth Reece, Yorktown

Reece scored 36 points as the Tigers won the Delaware County championship with victories against Wapahani and Delta. She tallied 19 points against Wapahani and 17 against Delta.
