Schools host legislative breakfast, discussion

FORTVILLE – The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation recently hosted a legislative breakfast attended by Speaker of the Indiana House of Representatives Brian Bosma, Sen. Michael Crider and Rep. Robert Cherry. Administrators and school board members from all four Hancock County public schools were in attendance, along with representatives from South Madison and Shelby Eastern school districts.

Educational topics discussed included new graduation/diploma requirements, future employment opportunities for students and funding improvements for schools. Several school representatives thanked members of the legislative panel for their efforts and the positive advancements they have made in education, including favorable funding changes and Teacher Appreciation Funds.

Other topics discussed were the Every Student Succeeds Act, district consolidation, mental health advancements in education, Core 40 requirements, school calendars and the new ISTEP test called ILEARN.

School representatives expressed appreciation for legislators’ time and interest in sharing information regarding the educational challenges faced by Hancock County constituents.
