Donald R. Schlegel, 81, of Greenfield, passed away Thursday, November 23, 2017, at Hancock Regional Hospital after a brief illness.

Don was born April 5, 1936, in Alexandria, Indiana, the son of the late Morton and Lucille Schlegel. Don married Shirley Andersen on March 29, 1958, in Kankakee, IL.

He was an Elementary Principal in Secor, IL; Monticello, IN; Argos, IN: Knightstown/Carthage, IN. Don received his Bachelor’s Degree at Olivet Nazarene University; his Master’s Degree from Indiana State University and his Ed.S degree from Purdue University.

He and his wife also served as missionaries in Haiti and short-term missionaries in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Don retired in 1995 after 35 years in the field of education. He was a member of the Madison Park Church of God in Anderson, and wherever he lived, serving the Lord was the priority.

Don enjoyed all types of sports but was a diehard Cubs fan and was overjoyed when they finally won the world series in 2016. His major hobby was “work.” He was always busy doing something. He and his wife loved to travel and visited many countries.

He is survived by his wife; daughter, Chris (Kent) Sullivan of Arlington, Ind; daughter-in-law, Chris Oradell, New Jersey; four grandchildren, Kaycee and Chase (Janice) Sullivan, Reid and Kirsten Schlegel. He was preceded in death by his son Mark, his parents and seven siblings.

He donated his body to Indiana University School of Medicine. A memorial service will be held on Dec. 22, 2017, at 10 a.m. at Madison Park Church of God in Anderson, Ind.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Madison Park Church of God – Missions, 6607 Providence Dr. Anderson IN 46013 or Hancock Regional Hospital Foundation to support CICU, 801 N. State St., Greenfield, IN 46140.

A huge “thank you” is extended to the emergency room staff, the staff in the CICU and the RT staff at Hancock Regional Hospital. The love and care they gave was exemplary!
