Local basketball teams fall over weekend

The Eastern Hancock girls basketball team opened its season on the road on Saturday at Hagerstown.

Despite a strong effort, the visiting Royals narrowly lost 57-55. Eastern Hancock returns to the court Friday night for its home opener against Centerville at 7:30 p.m.

Mt. Vernon dropped to 0-2 on the season with a 64-30 loss against host Warren Central on Saturday. The Marauders four-game road trip to open the season continues on Friday at Connersville.

Mt. Vernon lost at Franklin this past Thursday to open the season and travel to Lawrence Central on Tuesday, Nov. 14 before hosting Rushville on Nov. 17 for its home opener.

Greenfield-Central lost to host Whiteland on Saturday 40-33 to drop to 0-2 on the season. The Cougars are off this week and return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at home against Randolph Southern.

IBCA Player of the Week honorees announced

DeKalb High School senior Leigha Brown scored 53 points in one game and averaged 43.5 points over two to headline the winners in the first IBCA/Subway Player of the Week program for the 2017-18 season.

Brown is joined by Tipton junior Cassidy Crawford, Northwestern sophomore Madison Layden and Evansville Central junior Hya Haywood as honorees for Oct. 30 to Nov. 4 in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

Brown is the recipient for District 1. Crawford and Layden are co-winners for District 2. Haywood is the honoree for District 3.
