GREENFIELD

Elden Apple, 86, passed away peacefully at home Sunday October 29, 2017 surrounded by his family. Born April 3, 1931 he was the son of Phillip and Alice Apple of Greenfield, IN.

Elden was a proud lifelong resident of Greenfield. He attended Greenfield High School graduating in 1949. He played basketball, football and ran track at GHS and loved to share stories of the old days. Elden married his high school sweetheart Doris Apple on June 28th, 1952. He went on to college at the General Motors Institute earning an engineering degree. Elden spent his entire career at Allison Transmission retiring in 1987.

After spending time as an officer in the US Navy, Elden returned to Greenfield. Family was the center of Elden’s life. Holidays, anniversaries, birthdays and the famous ‘Riley Days Cookouts’ were annual events anticipated by all. Elden’s engineering background meant he was a stickler for details and organization. He documented family events each year with photos and videos providing us a record with lasting memories to share. He never missed a birthday or anniversary always sending a card for the occasion.

Sports was the other center of Elden’s life. He strived to attend every game and meet that his three sons Greg, Doug and Brian participated while in at Greenfield Central HS.

Elden attended over 50 Indianapolis 500 races and never missed an Indy Car race on TV. He made us all race fans. The family, along with friends, would attended races together with Elden for many years. He was an Indianapolis Colts season ticket holder and watched Indiana and Purdue sports equally cheering for both. Elden was a true “fan”. Elden and Doris enjoyed spending their winters at their condominium in Cape Coral Florida; doing so until the love of his life Doris, passed away in 2014.

Preceding Elden in death was his brother Edwin and parents.

He is survived by his Three sons Greg (Julie), Doug (Brenda) Brian (Debbie), as well as 5 granddaughters, Allison Cosat (Ross), Mallery Apple (Shawn), Amy Higgins (John), Melyn Brandt (Nathan), Adrienne Apple, four great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews with 2 more great grandchildren on the way in 2018.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, Pasco Chapel of Greenfield, 1780 W. Main St. Greenfield, IN 46140.
