Cougars Shootout set for next month

The Ninth Annual Cougar Shootout Basketball Tournament will be Nov. 11 at the Boys and Girls Club of Hancock County.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., with games set to tip off at 9 a.m. The cost to compete is $60 per team.

Proceeds go to support the Boys and Girls Club of Hancock County.

Greyhounds sweep for second straight tennis crown

Carmel took less than hour to take all five matches and put an exclamation point on a perfect season in winning the IHSAA boys tennis state title for the second straight year this past weekend.

All three Carmel singles players finished undefeated for the year to serve top-ranked Carmel (22-0) with a 5-0 win against Jasper at North Central High School. It was Carmel’s 10th crown in the sport, the past two under coach Spencer Fields. Sixteenth-ranked Jasper ended 20-4 with its third runner-up trophy in its first visit to the title match since 1999.

North Central’s Eddie Prein, a senior, was named the recipient of the Mental Attitude Award following the matches by the IHSAA Executive Committee.

Prein played No. 1 doubles for the Panthers this season and with teammate Brian McAuley finished his senior year 24-2.

Pacers Robinson out 3 to 4 months

Indiana Pacers guard/forward Glenn Robinson III underwent successful surgery Friday for a repair of medial and lateral ligaments in his left ankle.

Robinson III is expected to return in approximately three to four months. The surgery was performed by the Pacers’ medical staff at Orthopedic Indiana Hospital.

McHone, Thompson III named to USA Basketball staff

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado – Veteran USA Basketball coach Mo McHone and former Georgetown University head coach John Thompson III have been named assistant coaches for the USA’s November 2017 and February 2018 FIBA World Cup Qualifying Games.

The duo will assist former NBA head coach Jeff Van Gundy, who was announced on July 5 as head coach of the USA Basketball men’s national teams that will compete in the FIBA World Cup Qualifying games.

The United States is scheduled to open play facing Puerto Rico (site TBD) on Nov. 23, 2017, and the USA will host Mexico in Greensboro, N.C., on Nov. 26, 2017.

Jefferson, Nuggest agree to 1-year deal

DENVER — The Denver Nuggets are bringing in veteran forward Richard Jefferson.

A person with knowledge of the negotiations confirmed the one-year agreement to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because Jefferson’s deal hasn’t been disclosed by the team. ESPN first reported the deal, which it said is worth $2.3 million.

Jefferson was recently waived by Atlanta after being dealt to the Hawks from Cleveland. He became a free agent on Monday.
