The group editor for the Daily Reporter has been recognized for distinguished service to the Hoosier State Press Association.

Scarlett Syse supervises news operations for AIM Media Indiana’s daily newspapers in Columbus, Franklin, Greenfield and Seymour, and the company’s weekly newspapers in Pendleton, New Palestine, Fortville-McCordsville, Nashville and Brownstown. She has been in the group editor position since 2012.

The state press association presents the Distinguished Service Award annually to one or more individuals who have contributed in one or more of the following ways:

  • Made a significant impact on the newspaper industry in Indiana through service to the Hoosier State Press Association.
  • Performed outstanding service to the newspaper industry in general.
  • Demonstrated service in the local community that reflected positively on its newspaper.

Syse serves as chairperson of the HSPA Freedom of Information Committee, which advises HSPA executive director and general counsel Steve Key on public-access issues.

She also serves on HSPA’s Newsroom Seminar Committee, which plans the biggest event on HSPA Foundation’s calendar each year. This year, Syse also helped coordinate the HSPA Reporter’s Workshop and edited columns submitted by judges and attorneys as part of A Democracy’s Primer, a civic engagement project of the HSPA Foundation and Indiana Bar Association.

Syse is also involved in leadership roles for other journalism groups in Indiana as a member of the Associated Press Media Editors and Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame boards of directors.

She started working for the Daily Journal of Franklin in 1999. In 2009, when Syse was editor, the newspaper won the HSPA’s top honor, the Blue Ribbon Award for the best daily newspaper in Indiana. She was also recipient of a national journalism award, Local Media Association Editor of the Year award, in 2013.

Syse was presented with the 2017 HSPA Distinguished Service Award during a Sept. 22 conference in Indianapolis.
