FORTVILLE — A handgun was stolen from an unlocked car this week in Fortville during what investigators believe was a rash of vehicle break-ins along Madison Street in town limits.

The Fortville Police Department received eight reports from residents living near downtown, who said their unlocked cars had been entered overnight Monday.

One victim told officers a gun was taken from his car. A woman also had a purse stolen, but it was later recovered. Other residents reported having loose change and cash swiped.

Now, police are reminding residents to never leave valuables in their cars in plain view and to make sure vehicles are locked every night.

Anyone with information about these break-ins is asked to call 317-477-1144.
