FORTVILLE — The Mt. Vernon Marauders were carrying a troubling three-game losing streak prior to Friday night’s homecoming showdown with Delta.
Not anymore.
Building an early 10-7 lead, the Marauders played with renewed energy and kept charging forward, defeating Hoosier Heritage Conference rival Delta 31-26.
The meeting was the first between the two programs since last year’s sectional championship game when Delta won 12-6.
The Marauders enacted their revenge on their new turf field, which was highlighted by a homecoming festivities.
Tyson Harley found a groove under center for Mt. Vernon as he completed a touchdown pass to Braxton Trittipo with 1:30 left before halftime. The strike put Mt. Vernon up 17-14.
The Marauders scored on their opening drive in the second half to pull ahead 21-14. An touchdown in the fourth quarter with 9:38 remaining pushed Mt. Vernon’s advantage to 31-20.
Delta cut the deficit 31-26 with 1:01 left, but Mt. Vernon recovered an onside kick to seal the win. The Marauders improved to 2-3 on the season and are now 1-3 in the HHC.
