Jack M. Abel, 79, of Greenfield, passed away on Friday, September 1, 2017 at Community Hospital East. He was born on February 18, 1938 in Shelbyville as the son of Roy and Laverne (Plummer) Abel.

Graduated from Mt. Comfort High School in 1956 as valedictorian. He not only excelled in scholarship but also in basketball, baseball and track and was very proud of the fact that he and his two brothers held the shot putt record for Hancock County for many years. He graduated from Indiana University in 1961 with a bachelor of science in business degree. He went on to pass the CPA Exam and earn his CPA certificate in 1964. Jack married Sandra S. (Kuhn) on August 27, 1960 in Mt. Comfort.

In 1963, he began working at K. B. Parrish & Company, CPA firm and retired as Senior Partner in 1998. Jack was a member of American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Indiana Association of Certified Public Accountants. Jack’s number one priority was his family and caring for the “Homestead,” Oak Shadow, where for several years he enjoyed raising and showing part Arabian horses. He excelled in woodworking and had a life-long interest in history, especially the Civil War. He was a storyteller, his favorite line being “to make a long story short.”

Jack is survived his loving wife, Sandy Abel; daughter, Kristi (Steve) Durbin; grandson, Sean Durbin; sister-in-law, Sharon Farmer; brother-in-law Nelson Peredo; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Bill and Linda Kuhn; nieces and nephews, Linda (Jason) Worley, Cindy (Ken) Baker, Sheri Abbey, Malusa Peredo, Tony (Amy) Peredo, Darla (David) Leversen and Brian (Tina) Kuhn; and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Dennis Jay and Roy L. Abel; sister, Patti Jo Peredo; brother-in-law, Edgar Peredo; and nephew, Nelsie Peredo.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 8, 2017, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the mortuary. Pastor Alex Stone will be officiating. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery in Greenfield.
