Tourney to support cancer research

Fans are encouraged to support a good cause this Saturday during the fourth annual Greenfield-Central Kickin’ Cancer girls soccer tournament.

All proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society. There will be four teams playing in this event: the Greenfield-Central Cougars, the Lawrence Central Bears, the Decatur Tigers, and the North Knox Tigers.

In addition to soccer, face painting, a bounce house, bean bag toss and raffles for prizes will be conducted. Games are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. The title game is at 8 p.m.

There will be a dedication ceremony at halftime. Luminaries for the event are also for sale. They will be lit between the 6 and 8 p.m. games.

Standouts picked for weekly HHC honors

Hoosier Heritage Conference Players of the Week were announced for football, soccer and volleyball. The honors are for the week of Aug. 20.

Football Players of the Week

Offense: Niah Williamson, New Castle

The state’s passing leader, Williamson completed 35-51 passes for 345 yards and five TDs in a victory over Rushville.

Defense: Sam Lewis, Shelbyville

Lewis had five solo tackles, 10 total tackles, an interception in the end zone and also blocked a field goal in the closing seconds of a 17-16 win against Franklin.

Special Teams: Colby Jenkins, New Palestine

Jenkins averaged 37.3 yards per return in the Dragons’ win over Richmond. He also scored four TDs on offense.

Volleyball Players of the Week

Molly Hunt, Delta

Hunt had 97 kills in seven matches, with a high of 23 in a four-set victory against Daleville. She also had a double-double in a two-set win against Chatard.

Allison Dennemann, New Palestine

Dennemann had a big week with 55 kills, 31 digs, nine aces and four solo blocks as the Dragons won three matches, all in three sets. She had double-doubles in all three matches.

Soccer Boys Player of the Week

Timmy Clone, Mt. Vernon

Clone had five goals and six assists on the week, including a hat trick against Delta, as well as a goal and three assists against New Castle.

Girls Player of the Week

Trystan Ailes, Greenfield-Central

Ailes had three goals and an assist in a 5-0 victory against Yorktown.
