Samuel Allen Goodin, 71, of Greenfield passed away July 27, 2017. He was born on May 27, 1946 in Columbus, OH as the son of Carl and Louisa (Ellis) Goodin.

He graduated from Grove City High School in Ohio and attended IUPUI-Indianapolis, IN. Sam enlisted in the Ohio National Guard on March 1, 1965, and graduated from O.C.S. as a Second Lieutenant on July 3, 1967. He was promoted to Captain during a short stint in the Ohio National Guard. Transferring to the Indiana Army National Guard in 1980 and promoted to the rank of Major in 1984 and then to the rank of Lt. Colonel in 1988 in the U.S. Army Reserves. During his active reserve services, Sam graduated from the USAF Air Command and Staff College, USAF Nuclear Warfare School, The U.S. Army Command and the General Staff College. During his years with the 5030th U.S. Army Reserve School (1988-1993) at Fort Benjamin Harrison, IN, he served as the School Adjutant and the USAR Junior Officer Career School as the School Commandant. All total LTC Samuel A. Goodin had 28 years active reserve service and when he was Honorably retired by the U.S. Army on May 27, 2006, he had also been “On Call” for a total of 41 years.

During his civilian career, Sam was a service technician for the Addressograph-Multigraph Corp. of Cleveland, OH for 20 years. Going into the sales arena with a microfilm spin-off company when A-M Corp. was downsizing in 1982. Eventually, staying in the office equipment business until he found a real niche with Shirley Brothers Mortuaries as a Family Service Counselor, helping families’ pre-plan funerals. He found a great satisfaction in seeing the pressure and stress leave a families’ mind after everything was planned and the tough decisions were made and set aside. Sam often said of his experience with Shirley Brothers that in all of his sales career, he had never been treated with such respect and professionalism as he was by the Shirley family and their wonderful staff.

Sam also was a substitute teacher for Greenfield Central High School for 10 years and was a member of Bradley United Methodist Church, the NRA, and the American Legion.

Visitation will be Sunday, July 30, 2017 from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel, 9606 E. Washington St., with funeral services Monday at 11:00 a.m. Military rites will also be conducted by the Greenfield Veteran’s Honor Guard. Interment will be at Park Cemetery, Greenfield at a later date.

Sam is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Cheryl (Heck) Goodin; Nieces;? Lavonne Goodin Reeves, Suzanne Dean (Kevin); nephew, Dwight Goodin; sister-in-law, Jane Goodin; Great-niece, Lindsay Clifford (Dylan); and great-great nephew, Gabriel. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Louisa (Ellis) Goodin; and brother, David Goodin.
