Avis (Messer) Judd, 97, of Greenfield, passed away Thursday, July 27, 2017. She was born on September 2, 1919 in Knott County, Kentucky as the daughter of George L. and Sylvania (Fitzpatrick) Messer.

In 1938, she graduated from Hindman High School in Kentucky. Avis then graduated from Caney Junior College in Pippa Passes, Kentucky in 1940. She worked for Western Electric in Indianapolis until retiring in 1982. Avis married the late Garnet P. Copple. She later married Albert Judd, who also preceded her in death.

Avis had a passion for quilting and cooking, and she adored her family and grandchildren. She was also a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Greenfield for 15 years.

She is survived by her sons, William Lee Copple of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Robert P. Copple of Greenfield and Donald J. Copple of Shelbyville; daughters, Vera M. Major of Greenfield and Karen McLochlin of New Palestine; 15 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren; and a very special niece, Joanne (John) Inman.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Sylvania Messer; first husband, Garnet P. Copple; second husband, Albert Judd; daughter, Velma K. Crawford; and many brothers and sisters.

Visitation will be held on Monday, July 31, 2017 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will begin immediately following visitation at 1:00 p.m. at the mortuary. Rev. Randall Parker will be officiating. Burial will follow at Asbury Cemetery in Morristown.
