First local man to die in Vietnam War honored

GREENFIELD — Local veterans organizations will conduct a special memorial service to honor the first local soldier who died during the Vietnam War.

The service, 7 p.m. July 18 at the Vietnam Veterans Park at the corner of State Road 9 and Davis Street, Greenfield, will pay tribute to Pfc. John Modglin, who died 50 years ago on July 18. Taps and a 21-gun salute will be performed in honor of his sacrifice.

Modglin, Third Marine Division, was born Feb. 26, 1949, and died at age 18 in South Vietnam. He was survived by his mother, Jewel Modglin, and two brothers.

The memorial event is free and open to the public.
