Learning leadership through hard work

MUNCIE – Mt. Vernon High School students scored well on team and individual events at a recent Family, Career and Community Leaders of America competition.

The 2017 Indiana ProStart and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America State Leadership Conference brought some 850 students, advisers, alumni and guests to the Horizon Convention Center in Muncie. Indiana FCCLA is a career and technical student organization that provides personal growth, leadership development and career preparation for students in family and consumer sciences education.

The Mt. Vernon High School FCCLA chapter received the Gold Honor Chapter Award, 30/30 Membership Award, and Expand Your Horizons Award.

Mt. Vernon FCCLA members received the following awards:

  • Olivia Spicer, silver place medal, FCCLA in Action Student Body. Her program focused on healthy exercise programs for high school students.
  • Carrie Bilyou, Destiny Huber, Emily Stephan and Brooke Langlotz, silver medals, FCCLA in Action Community Service. Their project was focused on the National American Tooth Fairy Initiative, in which they collected dental hygiene products to distribute to children and families in the community.
  • Adison Wooldridge, honorable mention, state projects in Early Childhood Learning Pac and Early Childhood Healthy Snacks. Her project focused on creating lessons to use at preschools and teaching healthy eating to preschoolers.

More than 500 students from 63 schools participated in competitive events related to family and consumer sciences. Students receiving a first- or second-place finish in each event have the opportunity to represent Indiana at the National FCCLA Conference in Nashville, Tennessee.
