The Greenfield-Central softball team won three straight, and Morganne Denny rewrote history in the process.

Defeating visiting 10th-ranked Connersville 11-9 on Thursday, the Cougars rallied back from two three-run deficits to win. Denny contributed to the rally going 2-for-3 with two home runs and three RBIs.

Her two home runs tied and broke the program’s all-time career home-run record. Denny currently has 23 home runs in her career.

Maria Kihega went 3-for-4 in the game with two RBIs, and Makayla Durick went 2-for-4. Michaela Ballman earned the win, pitching in relief.

The Cougars won their third straight after sweeping visiting Warren Central on Saturday 12-2 and 10-2.

Lexi Rankin threw a complete-game for the win in the first game, and Durick struck out five to win the second game.

Kihega hit a walk-off grand slam to run-rule the first game. The Cougars are now 4-1 and traveled to Noblesville on Monday.

Dragons win HHC opener

The New Palestine Dragons scorched the New Castle Trojans on the road 19-3 in six innings to open their Hoosier Heritage Conference schedule 1-0.

The Dragons had 18 hits, including two home runs and six extra-base hits. Michaela Jones was 2-for-4 with her second homer this season, a double and five RBIs.

Emily O’Connor drove in five runs and crushed a home run to go 3-for-4. Mary Crumlin was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Elisha Barker recorded the win with four strikeouts in three innings.

The Dragons are now 2-0 on the season and played Roncalli in their home opener Monday.

Marauders split with Lutheran

The Mt. Vernon Marauders beat Indianapolis Lutheran 9-0 and lost 5-4 to split a doubleheader Saturday.

Mt. Vernon used a seven-run second and 11 hits to win the first game. Mackenzie McCann went 3-for-4 on the day while MaKenzie Gee hit a grand slam. Kaitlyn Nugent pitched a complete-game shutout for the win with six strikeouts.

Cassidy Parker and Samantha Bennett each had two RBIs for the Marauders in the second game. Lutheran scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh.

Royals power past Golden Bears

The Eastern Hancock Royals defeated Shelbyville 9-8 on Friday. The Royals rallied back from a 6-1 deficit to win with a four-run bottom of the sixth and a go-ahead run in the seventh.

Peyton West was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Micah Black went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Kaysi Gilbert hit 2-for-4 with three RBIs. West and Black each had one home run. Gilbert blasted a pair.

Golf

Marauders win season opener

The Mt. Vernon boys golf team kicked off the season Saturday, winning the Yorktown Invitational at The Players Club in Muncie.

The Marauders carded a 316 to fend off Delta (332) and Richmond (340).

Oliver Mast was medalist, shooting a 73, while fellow Mt. Vernon senior Will Dant was third at 76. Xavier Dunham tied for fourth at 77. Elijah Dunham and Max Heitman turned in a 90 and 95, respectively.

New Palestine was ninth overall as a team with a score of 364. The Dragons were led by Blake Barnette’s 82. Quinn Dobbins shot an 85.

Tennis

Dragons complete sweep

The New Palestine Dragons swept the New Castle Trojans 5-0 at home Friday.

No. 1 singles player Amelia Fleetwood dominated 6-0, 6-0. Lexi Miller won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. No. 3 singles went to Elizabeth Lamar 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles, Katie Settergren and Josee King won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1, while Sheridan Schrowe and Lauren Didelot secured No. 2 doubles at 6-1, 6-0.

The Dragons are now 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference.

Marauders open season with win

The Mt. Vernon Marauders opened their season with a 4-1 win against Pendleton Heights in a Hoosier Heritage Conference match.

The doubles team of Maeve Mcafferty and Sophie Williams won 6-1, 6-0. Olivia Spicer went 6-2, 7-1 at No. 2 singles.

Emily Anakin and Maeve Laughlin won 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 at No. doubles. Kayleigh Helm secured a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles.

Baseball

Royals fall to Raiders

The Eastern Hancock baseball team lost to Shenandoah 9-2 on Saturday.

Easton Fields and A.J. Muegge both drove in runners. Jarett Lewis and Addison True scored both runs. Muegge went 2-for-3.

Dragons sweep Golden Bears

The New Palestine Dragons swept past Shelbyville on Friday, defeating the Golden Bears 12-2 in five innings and 10-0 in six innings.

Colby Jenkins was 3-for-4 with three runs and two stolen bases in the first win. Jack Walker went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Keegan Watson earned the win with four strikeouts in four innings.

Tyler Martin, who had five RBIs in the first game, drove in another four in the second and went 2-for-4. Nick Rusche had two RBIs. Watson was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The Dragons are now 4-0 on the year and 2-0 in HHC.

Cougars split with Trojans

The Greenfield-Central Cougars defeated New Castle 1-0 and lost 8-0 to split their Hoosier Heritage Conference doubleheader.

Drey Jameson threw a complete-game one-hitter with 10 strikeouts to secure the Cougars’ win. Nick Atwood drove in the winning run.

Tyler Farrell had a double and scored the team’s only run. The Cougars are now 4-1 and 1-1 in the HHC.
