Mary Ellen Smith, 100, of Greenfield, passed away Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at The Legacy at Springhurst. She was born on February 27, 1917, in Marion County, Kentucky. She married Harold Edwin Smith on June 2, 1944, in Indianapolis, and they were happily married for 51 years.
Harold and Mary owned and operated the local hardware store from 1959 until she retired. They treasured the many friendships that were formed over the years.
Mary was a beautiful lady with a caring, compassionate heart. She loved and enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also had a passion for gardening and working outdoors. However, the most important aspect of her life was her faith in Christ, which she endeavored to instill in her family.
Mary is survived by her sons, Wayne (Debbie) Smith of Noblesville and Gary (Clara) Smith of Greenfield; grandchildren, Tracy (Steve) Wilson, Jennifer (Rex) Brattain, Jon (Anna) Smith and Callie Smith; nine great grandchildren, Matthew, Emily and Robert Wilson, Elizabeth Brattain, and Taylor, Jonathan, Jalyn, Trenton and Tyler Smith; sisters, Ruth Brockman, Helen (Elbert) Drury and Betty (Leon) Vincent.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, and sisters, Ann Benningfield, Lottie Breshear and Dorothy Brown.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to Noon on Saturday, March 25, at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will be at Noon with Rev. Randall Parker officiating. Inurnment will take place at Washington Park East Cemetery on a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made by mail to the Bethel Baptist Church, 1610 S. State Street, Greenfield, IN 46140, or envelopes will be available at the mortuary.
