Cougars standout named finalist for state honor

Greenfield-Central senior Madison Wise was named a 2017 Indiana Miss Basketball finalist this week.

Wise is considered one of three finalists for the coveted award along with Gary West Side’s Dana Evans and Homestead’s Karissa McLaughlin.

The winner will be announced at the Indiana Sports Awards banquet April 27 with a featured performance by former Colts punter Pat McAfee.

Wise, a 6-foot-1 forward, is only the fifth player in girls basketball state history to surpass 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her career. She averaged 23.5 points, 10.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game as a senior. The Iowa State recruit finished her career with the county’s and school’s girls basketball scoring record at 2,109 points.

McLaughlin led Homestead to the Class 4A state title this year. She has 2,586 points in her career and averaged 25.9 points, 5.6 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game.

Evans, who is committed to Louisville, was named a McDonald’s All American and a finalist for the Naismith Trophy. She averaged 35.8 points per game with 7.6 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 4.8 steals. She concluded her career with 2,832 points.

Local athletes selected as Preseason All-State

New Palestine’s Keegan Watson and Greenfield-Central’s Drey Jameson were named Preseason All-State First Team this week by Prep Baseball Report for Indiana.

Jameson, a senior ace and outfielder, tied for second in home runs last season in the state with Watson, finishing with nine. The Ball State recruit hit .395 as a junior, and he was 2-4 with a 2.65 ERA with 82 strikeouts.

Watson, a Nebraska recruit, was first in Class 3A in home runs and hit .402 in 112 plate appearances. The senior was named Hancock County Player of the Year for a second straight season and is a two-time IHSBCA All-State first team selection.

Royals 3-on-3 hoops tournament slated

The Eastern Hancock Athletic Boosters will conduct their annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament on Saturday at Eastern Hancock Schools.

There will be five divisions of play, each for boys and girls. There also will be two open divisions for those 35 and younger and 35 and older.
