FORTVILLE — A woman was airlifted from the scene of a three-car crash that left a main thoroughfare in Fortville closed for several hours Wednesday afternoon.

The accident happened around 1:45 p.m. in the 700 block of W. Broadway Street in Fortville, between Vitality Drive and North County Road 300W.

Police said a woman driving westbound on Broadway Street crossed the center line and side-swiped an oncoming pickup truck. She then lost control of her sedan and was struck by a minivan that was headed eastbound on Broadway Street, police said.

The woman was trapped in her vehicle after the impact, police said. Local fire department medics cut the woman from her car before she was taken by medical helicopter to an area hospital.

The woman’s condition was not known at press time, but officials said she was conscious when she was taken from the crash site.

The drivers of the truck and minivan were not injured in the accident, police said.

The names of those involved in the crash were not available at press time.

The accident remains under investigation by the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department and the Fortville Police Department.
