Dragons hosting Military Appreciation Night

New Palestine High School is conducting a Military Appreciation Night during tonight’s winter homecoming boys basketball game against Yorktown.

Helping Hands for Freedom, a group founded by Shelby County resident and two-time Purple Heart and Bronze Star recipient Patrick Shannon, will be honor veterans attending the game.

All military members past and present will receive free admission to the games, with the junior varsity matchup starting at 6 p.m.

Helping Hands for Freedom’s goal is to assist the families of the fallen and wounded and deployed service members while raising awareness.

Mt. Vernon softball clinic registration open

A softball clinic is scheduled to be conducted at Mt. Vernon High School on Feb. 25, inside the main gymnasium.

The event will be run by the Mt. Vernon High School softball program.

Participants in first through fifth grades will train from 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. with check-in between 8:45 and 9 a.m. Those in sixth through eighth grade will check-in from 12:15 to 12:30 p.m. and will practice from 12:30 to 3 p.m.

The cost for the clinic is $30, including a T-shirt, with checks made payable to MVHS. The registration deadline is Friday, Feb. 17.

Pacers’ Turner to play in Rising Stars Challenge

INDIANAPOLIS — Second-year center Myles Turner of the Indiana Pacers was named to participate in the BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge the Friday night of All-Star Weekend from Feb. 17 to 19 in New Orleans.

The game will feature first- and second-year NBA players from the United States against first- and second-year NBA players from around the world. Players are selected by a vote of the league’s assistant coaches.
