The New Palestine gymnastics team kicked off the 2017 season with consecutive wins this week, including a three-way victory at home Thursday night.

Emily Heighway won all four events for the Dragons in their home opener as New Palestine tallied 98.9 points. Shelbyville was second with 78.525 points and Waldron was third at 50.625.

Heighway amassed 34.575 points to secure first in the all-around event. Faith Land was second with 32.875, Bailey Watkins was third at 31.2, and Taylor Brown was fourth at 30.65.

The Dragons won the top-four spots on the vault with Heighway, again, winning with a score of 8.5. Brown (8.45), Land (8.35), and TeTe Hart (8.3) followed Heighway.

New Palestine clinched the top-six spots on uneven bars. Heighway was first at 8.5. Land (7.75), Grace Shanahan (7.5), Alyssa Boothe (6.525), Watkins (6.475) and Brown (6.15) rounded out the Dragons’ winners.

Heighway tallied an 8.975 to win the floor exercise and an 8.55 to take first in the balance beam.

The Dragons won the top-six spots in the floor exercise with Watkins (8.4) second, Land (8.275) third, Brown (8.125) fourth, Hart (7.95) fifth, and Alex Black sixth (7.875).

During Tuesday’s season opener, the Dragons defeated host Connersville and New Castle. New Palestine won with 97.15 points. Connersville was second at 95.775. New Castle was third at 96.25.

Heighway was the individual all-around winner with 34.0 points. Land was fourth (31.925) and Brown was sixth (29.00).

Heighway placed first in both the uneven bars (8.275) and on floor exercise (9.1). Land was third on the uneven bars (7.95) and fourth on floor exercise (8.275).

On vault, Heighway was second, scoring an 8.75. Land was third at 8.3. Heighway was third on the balance beam at 7.875.

The Dragons are 4-0 on the season and competes at Columbus North on Thursday.

Girls basketball

Royals halt streak, beat Morristown

The Eastern Hancock girls basketball team snapped its five-game losing streak with a strong showing on Thursday night.

The Royals defeated the Morristown Yellow Jackets 58-44 to improve to 9-8 on the season.

Emiley Carlton led the Royals with a 22-point night, shooting 8 of 16 from the field and converting 6 of 12 free throws. She finished with a double-double with 11 rebounds while adding four steals and an assist.

Liberty Durham had 13 points on 5 of 9 shooting and hauled in six rebounds. Bailey Allen contributed five rebounds, two assists and four steals along with six points.

The Royals travel to New Palestine on Thursday night. The varsity game will start at 7:30 p.m.

Coed swimming

Royals win eight events at Chatard

The Eastern Hancock girls swim team placed second at the Bishop Chatard three-way on Thursday.

The Royals scored 94 points behind the host Trojans 118. Cardinal Ritter was third with 91 points.

Shelby Kell won two events for Eastern Hancock, finishing first in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:56.11. She led the 100 backstroke with a 1:10.96.

Elise Huffman was second in the 100 free at 1:06.13 and won the 200 free in 2:23.65.

The boys swim team was third overall with 70 points. Cardinal Ritter won the event with 113 and Bishop Chatard was second at 96.

The Royals won five events, including two individual swims by Chris Walton.

Elijah Harris was first in the 100 free with a time of 54.75 seconds. Walton’s wins unfolded in the 100 backstroke (1:01.35) and in the 500 free (5:21.71).

The Royals’ 200 medley relay team won with a swift time of 1:59.70. The 400 free relay took first in 3:50.55.
