Phyllis A. Newkirk, 84, of formerly Shelbyville, passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2017, in Indianapolis. She was born September 16, 1932, in Farmington, Mich., the daughter of Frank and Frances (McClusky) Hough.

She married Arvon Newkirk on September 16, 2002, and he preceded her in death on October 25, 2016.

Phyllis is survived by her daughters, Cynthia “Cindy” (Ricklefs) Junken and husband, Scott, Sally (Ricklefs) Nicholson and husband, Tony, and Patricia “Patty” (Ricklefs) Furrow and fiance’, Brian Miller, all of Shelbyville, and Penny (Ricklefs) McClarnon and husband, Patric, of Greenfield; sisters, Frances Holthus of Michigan and Mickey McAllister of Gulf Shores, Ala.; grandchildren, Andrea Turner and husband, Mike, Christopher Junken and wife, Tiffany, Nikki Vogel and husband, Dan, Ty Nicholson and wife, Crystal, John McClarnon and wife, Kelly, Eric McClarnon and wife, Kara, Kevin McClarnon and wife, Casey, Charlie McClarnon, Cory Van Natta and Brooke Van Natta; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Frank Hough; and sister, Nancy McGowan.

Phyllis graduated from Farmington High School in 1950. She retired from Marsh Supermarkets, where she was a pharmaceutical assistant. Phyllis was a member of the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed sewing, painting and crafts. Phyllis also collected dolls. She enjoyed singing karaoke with her friends.

Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m., Saturday, January 7, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m., Saturday at the funeral home, with Rev. Bill Horner officiating. Inurnment will be at Miller Cemetery in Shelby County.
