Greenfield-Central’s wrestling team finished fourth overall at the 32-team Connersville Spartan Classic on Thursday.

At 120 pounds, Carter Noehre went 5-0 in his weight class to win an individual title.

Also for the Cougars, at 113 pounds, Gavin Rose finished 4-1 for a second place. At 170 pounds, Brad Lowe went 5-1 for third place and Lee Dullaghan, at 195 pounds, was also third after going 5-1.

Other top finishers on the team included Luke Sheridan, who was 3-2 at 106 pounds, and Hunter Gulden, who was 3-2 at 285 pounds.

Carmel won the team championship with 244 points, while Roncalli was second with a score of 228. Lebanon (211) was third.

Eastern Hancock 2nd in class

Eastern Hancock’s wrestling team finished second in its class (2A) at the Spartan Classic. Overall, the Royals were 14th.

Josh Robinson finished 5-2 for fourth place in his weight class, Brandon Francis was 3-3 for sixth, Alexander Burton was 4-2 for seventh and Jordyn Willis finished 4-3 for eighth.

Also for Eastern Hancock, Colby Hunt and Jack Smith were 2-2 on the day.

Boys basketball

New Palestine drops pair

New Palestine dropped a pair of contests at the Beech Grove Tournament on Friday, finishing fourth overall.

Beech Grove topped the Dragons 76-43 in the opening round. Then, New Palestine lost 51-47 to Decatur Central in the consolation game.

In the opener, the hosts had a hot start, jumping out to 18-3 in the first quarter and extending it to 38-15 at halftime.

In the second game, the Dragons put on a furious fourth-quarter comeback. New Palestine trailed 11-6 after a quarter and 25-13 at the half. A 13-11 third quarter drew the Dragons within 10 after three, but Decatur Central used a big run to take a 47-32 lead. After a delay due to a light malfunction, the Dragons responded with a 13-2 run to cut the deficit to 49-45 in the final minute. However, Decatur Central held on just enough for the win.

Freshman point guard Maximus Gizzi had 15 points to lead the team in the consolation game. Senior wing Jalen Qualkinbush had 11.

New Palestine is now 1-7 on the season. It plays again on Friday at Delta. The next home game is Saturday, Jan. 7 against sectional opponent Marshall.
