Like a Bullet: Greenfield-Central tops conference rival Mt. Vernon

FORTVILLE — With a slim frame and short stature, Greenfield-Central sophomore Carley Logan glided through the water like a bullet.

Knifing her way to four first-place finishes on Tuesday at Mt. Vernon, Logan helped Greenfield-Central win 10 events on way to a 139-47 win against the Marauders.

The Cougar boys were also victorious, using their depth to run away with a 130-55 win.

Logan, who is the daughter of Greenfield-Central coaches Mark and Emily Logan, has obviously spent plenty of time in — or around — a pool. And although she’s considered an underclassmen, Logan performed like a veteran on Tuesday, individually winning the 200- and 500-yard freestyles.

She teamed with three other Cougars to take first in the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay, as well.

“Carley has a very stubborn and strong-willed streak about training,” Emily Logan said. “She’s not one of those who is afraid to push herself. She thrives in our practices and is with the upper guys. She is a very humble kid. I think being raised with two brother has made an impact.”

As a freshman last season, Logan swam in two events at the state finals at IUPUI and appears to be on pace again this year.

For Mt. Vernon on Tuesday, junior Lydia Tierney was first in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard butterfly. She also swam in multiple events at state last season.

Marauders coach Dixon Tierney said it is time for Tierney, among others, to start thinking about the last meet of the season. As for the new swimmers in the program, he plans to focus on the shorter races for aerobic endurance.

“We are going to try and get our technique down after Christmas break,” Dixon Tierney said. “A lot of them are freshman and newer swimmers.

“With some of the advanced swimmers, we are really trying to zone in on state and seeing what we can work with with training. We are starting to get stronger in the weight room.”

Greenfield-Central junior Zach Cook, who recently returned from nationals in Georgia, took first in four events, including two relays and the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly. His teammates, Ethan Kile and Chris Joven, also went home with four blue ribbons, while freshman Samual Jennings won three.

“This is probably the strongest team, on both sides, that we’ve ever had,” Emily Logan added. “They are literally fighting for spots.”

In the diving portion of the meet, Greenfield-Central senior Shyanne Milne showed she is trending in the right direction after heart surgery on the first day of practice. She took first with 220.35 points, while teammate Maci Montgomery was right on her heels in second with 217.85 points. Mt. Vernon’s Maddie King was third with a score of 213.80.

For the boys, Cougars’ veteran diver Ben Rader easily won with 254.35 points.

Greenfield-Central’s Anne Dekeyser and Krista Zornes won three events on the girls’ side Tuesday.

Mt. Vernon received solid contributions from Jordan Spearman (diving) and Bryce Gray. Gray finished in second in two events and helped the Marauders win the 200-yard freestyle relay. The Cougars won the five other relay events swam on Tuesday.

The Cougars and Marauders will see one another again at the Hoosier Heritage Conference meet in January and the New Palestine Sectional midway through February.

Last season, both Greenfield-Central teams earned HHC and sectional titles. The conference title for the girls was the first in program history.
