Brand, Matus earn soccer All-State honors

Greenfield-Central sophomore Lucy Brand and New Palestine senior Meaghan Matus were both named to the 2016 Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association’s Soccer All-State First Team.

Brand was only one of three sophomores selected to the team. The midfielder scored one goal and dished out four assists this season for the Cougars. Greenfield-Central finished 7-8-2 and won its first sectional title since 2012 before reaching the regional finals. Brand was named All-HHC.

Matus scored two goals and finished with a team-high six assists this season. The midfielder was named All-HHC. The Dragons were 10-4-1 this year and finished second in the conference.

New Albany No. 1 in boys basketball rankings

The Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Top 20 boys basketball rankings were released Sunday.

Tickets for Greenfield-Central showcase games available

The Greenfield-Central Cougars are playing in the City Securities Hall of Fame Classic at the New Castle Fieldhouse on Dec. 29. The Cougars open against Plainfield at 11 a.m. and will advance to either the 6 p.m. consolation or 7:30 p.m. championship game.

The Cougars are also playing in the Indiana vs. Kentucky Challenge Cup at the New Castle Fieldhouse on Jan. 7. The Cougars play Mason County (Ky.) High School at 11 a.m.
