Whitaker named ICGSA Coach of the Year

New Palestine volleyball coach Kelli Whitaker was named the Class 3A South Coach of the Year by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association this weekend.

Whitaker has led the Dragons since 2013 and carries an 81-55 record the past four years. The past two seasons her team has gone 52-21, including this year’s 27-11 semistate runner-up finish.

The Dragons won their first sectional title since 1989 this fall and first regional in school history. The program also won its first semistate match to advance into the 3A final four.

New Pal’s Dennemann earns all-state honors

New Palestine junior Allison Dennemann has been selected to the Class 3A All-State volleyball team by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association.

Dennemann was joined by six other players from Hoosier Heritage Conference programs on the All-State first team, including three from Delta and three from 3A state champion Yorktown.

Mt. Vernon’s Julia Wayer was named 4A All-State second team.

Noble, Eagleson running strong at Lee University

Mt. Vernon graduate Christian Noble and New Palestine graduate Seth Eagleson helped the Lee University cross-country team win its first championship in the NCAA Division II South Region on Saturday.

Noble is a freshman on Lee University’s cross-country team and was the first Lee runner to cross the finish line during the South Region Championship. He placed third overall with a time of 31:49.9.

Noble was one of the four Lee runners to be placed on the All-Region list for NCAA Division II Cross Country.

Eagleson is a junior at Lee University and finished 10th during the South Region Championship with a time of 32:29.2. Eagleson was named to the All-Region list for NCAA Division II Cross Country.

Greenfield-Central’s Wise earns IBCA honor

Greenfield-Central’s Madison Wise scored 42 points in one game and averaged 31.5 points over two to headline the winners in the first IBCA/Subway Player of the Week program for the 2016-17 season.

Wise, a senior, is joined by Fort Wayne Canterbury senior Mason VanHouten and Martinsville junior Kayana Traylor is honorees for Oct. 31 through Nov. 5 in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

VanHouten is the recipient for District 1, Wise for District 2 and Traylor for District 3.

The 6-foot-1 Wise opened her week with 21 points, six rebounds and four assists as Greenfield-Central (2-0) knocked off Greenwood 59-25. Wise followed by scoring 42 points with seven rebounds and three assists in a 60-51 triumph over Whiteland.

She was 13 of 23 from the field, 3 of 5 on 3-pointers and 13 of 14 on free throws against the Warriors. For both games, Wise was 22 of 41, 4 of 9 and 17 of 21.
