For the first time since 2005, the Greenfield-Central Cougars cheer squad seized the state’s top prize.

The Cougars placed first in the Varsity Coed Division on Saturday night during the 2016 Indiana Cheer Championship State Finals in New Castle.

Performing before their peers and an energetic crowd inside New Castle Chrysler Fieldhouse, the Cougars led by head coach Laken Peal finished ahead of runner-up New Palestine and third-place Charlestown to claim the championship trophy.

Mt. Vernon was third in the Varsity B Division behind state champion Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger and runner-up Hamilton Heights.

North Central (Indianapolis) won the Timeout Division state title. The Varsity C championship went to Tri-West Hendricks and the Noblesville Millers earned the Varsity A crown.

Mt. Vernon’s Madeline King and Greenfield-Central’s Ava Dickmann and Kenzie Horning were honored as All-State cheerleaders during the state finals. The Cougars duo is the first tandem in program history to earn the recognition in the same year.
