Jo Anne (Alfke) Schakel, 85, of Greenfield, passed away on Monday, October 31, 2016, in Greenfield. She was born on October 23, 1931, to the late Henry and Helen (Geddes) Alfke.
Jo Anne was a graduate of New Palestine High School and the House of James Beauty School. She married the love of her life, Vernon C. Schakel, on October 5, 1962. In her earlier years, she worked at Buckley’s Restaurant. She also was a book keeper for Vernon C. Schakel Construction Co. and the co-founder of the Schakel Center & Bolts & Nuts of Hancock County.
Surviving Jo Anne is her sister, Helen (Don) Valente; daughters, Sharon “Gussie” Schakel, Saundra L. (Donavon) Box; grandchildren, Aaron Michael, Kaylene Hunter, Brenden Christian; many nieces, nephews, cousins; and special family friends, Tom and Cheryl Harrison.
She is preceded in death by her parents listed above; husband, Vernon C. Schakel; brothers, Hank and Bill; and sister, Mary.
The family would like to especially thank the nursing staff at Community Healthy Heart Clinic (Mindy, Kelley and Andrea (CCC) for their compassionate care throughout the years.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, November 4, at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, Pasco Chapel of Greenfield, 1780 W. Main St, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 5, with visitation one hour prior to the service at Trinity Lutheran Church, 8540 E 16th St, Indianapolis, IN 46219. Burial will immediately follow at Philadelphia Church Cemetery in Philadelphia.
