GREENFIELD — Students from the Academy at Greenfield-Central, the district’s recently-opened alternative school, volunteered their time at Greenfield-Hancock Animal Management recently.

Students cleaned and tidied the facility, but they also walked dogs and helped socialize the animals in the shelter.

The alternative school is for students who don’t flourish in a conventional classroom setting and might be at risk of dropping out, officials said. The program places an emphasis on community service and internships in addition to offering morning and afternoon classroom learning sessions.
