Letter: Library distances itself from program with disclaimer

To the editor:

I noticed that the article in the Weekend Reporter (“Group: Gender not just either, or,” Oct. 8, A1) announcing the upcoming program at the library on transgender issues made it very clear that the library is not actually sponsoring the program but simply offering the space as it would to any organization willing to agree to the library’s terms.

I haven’t noticed this clarification in other announcements of events taking place at the library, so I suspect the nature of the program was the reason that either the library or the Daily Reporter wanted the explanation. Probably a good idea, but a few will no doubt find something to criticize anyway. I know that some readers still believe that newspapers agree with everything published on the opinion page. Perhaps libraries have a similar problem with events held there.
