GREENFIELD — In a rematch of the Hancock County tournament final just weeks ago, Mt. Vernon wasted little time earning revenge over Sectional 9 host Greenfield-Central.

Senior Jaclyn Bulmahn led the Marauders with 20 kills on Saturday in a 3-0 win of their familiar foe. Mt. Vernon won the first set 25-17 — its closest margin of victory on Saturday — and the second and third sets, 25-16.

Seniors Emily Diehr and Laura Banton paced the Cougars with 12 and 9 kills, respectively, as Greenfield-Central finished its season 18-13 in head coach Travis Fuller’s first year.

The Cougars won the county tournament earlier this month against Mt. Vernon, 2-1.

Mt. Vernon improved to 27-7 and repeated as sectional champs Saturday evening with a 3-0 win over New Castle.

“We were more nervous about the Greenfield-Central match,” Mt. Vernon head coach Eric Bulmahn said after the win over the Trojans. “Our serving was on point and got (Greenfield-Central) out of their rhythm.”

Greenfield-Central tied the score at 15-all in the third set but, as before, the Marauders halted any chance of a comeback. They used a 8-0 run to eventually seal the win.

Mt. Vernon senior Ashton Barr finished with nine kills and 22 assists. Senior Julia Wayer and junior Grace Hurst collected 29 digs together in the back row, while junior Meridan Eads totaled 15 assists and 13 digs.

Sophomore setter Molly Broome was productive for the Cougars, tallying 24 assists and nine digs. Sophomore libero Hannah Burkhart led the team with 13 digs, while Banton added 12.

Banton led Greenfield-Central with 339 kills this season. Diehr added 224 kills and led the team with 92 blocks. The Cougars graduate four seniors, including Morgan Colclazier and Olivia Joven in addition to Banton and Diehr, and will return six core players on their varsity roster next year.

Broome, who finished with 860 assists this season, will be back with the most experience. She also started as a freshman.
