HANCOCK COUNTY — The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a string of car break-ins in the southwest portion of the county.

More than a half dozen cars left unlocked in three New Palestine-area subdivisions were broken into overnight Tuesday, police said.

The thieves appeared to target vehicles they believed would contain valuables, officers said. A gun was stolen out of one of the cars, investigators said.

The break-ins occurred in the Countryside, Briarwood Trace and Schildmeier Woods neighborhoods.

Police advise residents to make sure to lock their car doors at night. All valuables, including purses, electronics and all money, should be removed from the car. If parking on the street, park in a well-lit area, officials said.

Any who notices suspicious activity should call 911. Anyone with information about the car break-ins is asked to call 317-477-1147.
