Marauders close out season strong

The Mt. Vernon volleyball team closed out the regular season with a 3-0 win against Beech Grove at home Wednesday night.

The Marauders went to work fast, winning 25-10, 25-23, 25-15. The victory was the team’s second straight since losing to Greenfield-Central in the Hancock County Tournament championship match last weekend.

Mt. Vernon was led by Jaclyn Bulmahn with 13 kills on 18 attempts. Maddie Keerns fired six aces, while Julia Wayer paced the defense with 16 digs. Ashton Barr had 22 assists.

The Class 4A No. 11 Marauders finished the year 25-7 and will face the rival Cougars in the Greenfield-Central Sectional semifinals on Oct. 22 at 12:30 p.m.

Royals drop a pair

The Eastern Hancock volleyball team narrowly lost 3-2 on Tuesday and fell 3-1 on Thursday with one regular-season match remaining on Saturday.

The Royals battled Indiana School for the Deaf on Tuesday, rallying back from a two-set deficit. Indiana Deaf won the first two sets 25-10, 25-18 before Eastern Hancock took the next two 25-11, 26-24. The host Deaf Hoosiers won the finale 17-15.

At home on Thursday, the Royals grabbed a 1-0 lead with a 25-13 first-set win, but the Monroe Central Golden Bears powered back to take the next three, 25-23, 25-22, 25-8.

The Royals drop to 12-17 on the season and travel to Indianapolis Tindley today before competing in the Class 2A Heritage Christian Sectional on Thursday.

Cougars lose 3rd straight

The Greenfield-Central Cougars lost their third consecutive match Thursday, falling to Warren Central 3-1.

The Class 4A Cougars lost 3-1 to Richmond on Monday before falling to top-ranked 3A Yorktown on Tuesday 3-0. The visiting Tigers won 25-20, 25-19, 25-13.

Laura Banton led the Cougars with 11 kills in the loss to Yorktown, while Molly Broome had 25 assists. Haleigh Pribble posted 16 digs and Hannah Burkhart finished with 15.

At Warren Central on Thursday, the Cougars trailed 2-0 after losing the first two sets 25-15, 25-19. They won the third 25-22, but lost the fourth, 25-23.

Pribble had 19 kills, and Broome posted five total blocks. Burkhart had 13 digs. Pribble scored 10 digs. Broome recorded 32 assists.

Greenfield-Central is 18-12 on the year.

Dragons fall in finale

The New Palestine Dragons lost a four-set match with Franklin 3-1 on Thursday night.

The seventh-ranked 3A Dragons dropped the first set 25-22 before tying up the match with a 25-13 second-set win. Franklin ran the table to take the next two sets, 27-25, 25-22.

Allison Dennemann led the Dragons with 28 kills, 23 digs and two aces. Mia Long had 11 kills, 17 digs and two aces. Kara Morris has 38 assists. Lydia Jones contributed 14 digs.

The Dragons finish the regular season 22-10 and will open the Crispus Attucks Sectional on Thursday against Herron.
