Gibson, Twins unable to slow down Mariners
The Seattle Mariners plated a pair of runs against Kyle Gibson and the Minnesota Twins before tacking on eight more against the bullpen to win 10-1 on Friday night.
Gibson, a Greenfield-Central graduate, took the loss as he gave up two runs on five hits over five innings. Gibson has allowed three runs over eight innings in his last two starts.
He has lowered his ERA from 5.34 to 5.04. Gibson earned his last win on Sept. 13 against the Detroit Tigers with a strong eight-inning performance. He struck out four and scattered five hits with one earned run. Gibson has a 6-11 record this season with 96 strikeouts in 141 innings pitched.
Against Seattle, Gibson gave up RBI-singles to Robinson Cano in the third and another to Mike Zunino in the fourth. He struck out former Indiana Mr. Baseball Adam Lind, an Anderson Highland graduate, with the bases loaded in the fifth to escaped unscathed.
“I think it was a step in the right direction for me,” Gibson said. “I felt a little better. But it’s tough to be too satisfied with a game where you go five innings and throw 100 pitches and your team loses 10-1.”

Soccer sectional pairings announced
The IHSAA sectional pairings for the 23rd annual boys and girls state tournament were released Friday. The state’s sectional tournaments will run from Oct. 3 to 8.
Class 2A New Palestine will host the boys sectional with Shelbyville and Greenfield-Central playing at 5 p.m. Oct. 5. Mt. Vernon and New Palestine will meet in the other semifinal at 7 p.m. Oct. 5. The winners will compete in the championship at 7 p.m. Oct. 8.
Class 2A Greenfield-Central will host the girls sectional. The Cougars will face Shelbyille in the semifinals at 5 p.m. Oct. 6. New Palestine and Mt. Vernon will play at 7 p.m. Oct. 6. The championship is scheduled for 2 p.m. Oct. 8.
