CHARLOTTESVILLE — Students in Eastern Hancock High School’s landscape management class got a real-life lesson in the upkeep of landscaping elements recently.

During a unit about hardscapes — or the nonliving aspects of landscapes, like walkways, walls and planters — Eastern Hancock superintendent Vicki McGuire invited the class to personally see to the upkeep of the planters and benches surrounding the district’s central office.

Members of the class worked together to sand, scrape and repaint several wooden hardscape items around the central office, said Eastern Hancock teacher Debbie Grass.

The class is taught by Sarah Williams, Eastern’s FFA advisor.
