Meth use leads to neglect charges

GREENFIELD — Three Greenfield residents charged with neglect of a dependent in two separate cases were arrested after a warrant sweep this week.

In one case, a man and a women were arrested tested positive for using methamphetamine. The couple, Amy Smith, 32, and Raney Jones, 25, both of 11 Candlelite Court, used the drug in front of their daughter, court records show.

On July 19, police found Raney near the intersection of McKenzie Road and Candlelite Court after neighbors called police about a suspicious person. Raney was sweating profusely and acting erratically, court documents state.

He told police three men were chasing him and shooting at him. He also told them the incident began at his home, and the men might be back there with his girlfriend and daughter, police said.

When police asked Raney if he’d been taking drugs, he admitted to drinking alcohol; later, he told police he and Smith had been “doing meth all night and all morning,” court records state.

Raney and Smith were both arrested Thursday and charged with neglect of a dependent as a Level 6 felony. At press time, each was being held at the Hancock County Jail on a $1,000 bond. Their child had been removed from their home and placed in the custody of a relative, records show.

Also on Thursday, Kristina Moorman, 26, 15 W. Pierson St., was arrested after police say she tested positive for using methamphetamine while caring for her boyfriend’s children, according to court records.

Police were called in late July when one of the three children wandered from Moorman’s home to a neighbor’s house, court records state. Neighbors called police after Moorman showed up at their house to pick up the girl; she was wearing only a T-shirt and underwear, court records show. The neighbors believed she was under the influence of drugs or alcohol and called police, documents state.

When police arrived and asked Moorman where the other two children she was caring for were, she said she didn’t know, court documents state. She appeared to be intoxicated, was sweating profusely and could not sit still, police said.

They gave Moorman a drug and alcohol test, and she tested positive for methamphetamine, according to court records; Moorman told police the last time she used meth was three days earlier. Moorman is charged with neglect of a dependent, a Level 6 felony.

At press time, she was being held at the Hancock County Jail on a $3,000 bond.
