HANCOCK COUNTY — Nine-Star Connect, an electric and telecommunications cooperative, recently sent two students to take part in the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association Washington D.C. Youth Tour, an event for students who just completed their junior year of high school and are interested in seeing the nation’s capital, learning more about NRECA, a national electric cooperative service organization and meeting new friends from across Indiana.

This year, NineStar sponsored Eastern Hancock High School students Jason Apple and Gabe Blake, according to a news release.

The seven-day trip included visits to Gettysburg, Arlington National Cemetery, several memorials, meeting the Indiana Congressional delegation, a Potomac River cruise, taking part in a National Youth Tour Rally and more.

“My trip to Washington D.C. was one of the best times of my life,” Jason said. “I enjoyed meeting tons of new people from all over the state and seeing all the monuments in the capital was an amazing sight. My favorite part of the trip has to be meeting Congressman Luke Messer. That’s an opportunity I never would have had if I didn’t go on the tour, and it’s something I will remember forever.”

Interested 2016-17 high school juniors who are NineStar Connect members may apply to be sponsored by the cooperative. More information about next year’s tour will be sent to county high school guidance counselors.
