Vermont Andrew Curtis passed away on August 28, 2016, in Greenfield. He was born in Conran, Mo., on December 10, 1932, to E.A. Curtis and Dellar Marie Howell Curtis and was one of 15 children.
Vermont proudly served in the Army for twenty years. During a tour of duty in Vietnam, as a member of Black Horse, the 11th Armored Calvary Division, Sergeant Curtis was awarded the Bronze Star Metal for valor and exceptional service. At the conclusion of a distinguished military career, Vermont joined his brother-law, Al Marcum, and managed the Marcum Swimming Pool Company of Indianapolis until his retirement in 1986.
Throughout his life, Vermont gained considerable acclaim as one of the best fast-pitch softball pitchers of his era.
Vermont is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Dorthy Louise Marcum Curtis; three sons, Monty, his wife, Jeannette, Scott, Tony ,his wife, Missy; and four grandchildren, Paige, Andrew, Cole and Cameron.
An unselfish leader with incredible strength, courage, commitment and dignity, Vermont’s influence continues to positively impact the lives of those who were fortunate to know him.
