McCORDSVILLE — A man fired multiple gunshots at a car during an altercation near a McCordsville neighborhood Wednesday, alarming neighbors and prompting police to launch an investigation.

Neighbors called 911 around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday after hearing gunshots in the area of North County Road 700W and Austin Trace Boulevard in McCordsville. Witnesses said a thin black man driving a green older-model Chevrolet Impala stopped along the 6900 block of County Road 700W, climbed out of his car and shot at another vehicle that had stopped nearby, police said.

Neighbors reported finding damage to cars and homes in the area after the incident, police said.

The man reportedly fired several rounds at a blue four-door sedan, police said. Callers were not able to give a description of a driver or any passengers in that car, and investigators are uncertain what led to the dispute or whether anyone was injured, police said.

Both cars then left the area in opposite directions, dispatch records show.

Nine bullet casings were found near the intersection of County Road 700W and Austin Trace Boulevard, said McCordsville Police Department Chief Harold Rodgers.

Investigators do not know if the blue car was struck by any of the shots. Though they do not believe anyone was injured, police have alerted area hospitals to be on the lookout for possible victims, Rodgers said.

Throughout Wednesday evening, several residents living near where the incident took place reported finding damage to various property, including cars and homes, caused by stray bullets, officials said.

Investigators have been in contact with police departments in the area to see if the incident in McCordsville is connected to any criminal reports from Indianapolis, Rodgers said.
