New Palestine’s tennis team earned a 3-2 win on the road Tuesday at Whiteland.

The Dragons (1-0) received a hard-fought win from sophomore Matthew True at No. 1 singles. He won 7-6 (2), 7-6 (3) against Caleb Scott to give New Palestine a 3-1 advantage and the win.

Earlier in the meet, both doubles teams won in straight sets.

The No. 1 team of David Hockett and Nick Rusche won over Ricardo Gonzales and Garrison Pelfree 6-1, 6-2. The No. 2 pair of Tyler Swain and Colby Wagoner came out on top 6-2, 6-0 for a 2-0 lead.

New Palestine’s Carson Gavin lost to Adam Zietlow 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, while Patrick Heffernan was defeated by Corey Ullrich 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.

The Dragons’ JV team lost 3-2. The JV doubles team of Dane Reid and Nathan Hubbard beat Andrew Deluca and Kyle Zajac 8-6 while Gaige Thompson and Buzz Wells won 8-2 against Wesley Hawk and Ravi Mann.

New Palestine is on the road today at Yorktown.

Boys soccer

Mt. Vernon defense stops Richmond coldMt. Vernon’s soccer team used a 5-0 win at Richmond on Tuesday to begin its season 1-0.

Seniors Carson Jones and Jarret Whitehouse added two goals apiece while senior Matt Schafer added one of his own. The Marauders took a 2-0 lead into halftime.

“Great defensive effort shutting down the Richmond attack,” Mt. Vernon head coach Matt Mayhew said.

The Marauders open Hoosier Heritage Conference play on Saturday at New Castle at 11 a.m.

Volleyball

Mt. Vernon rights shipAfter an opening night loss to 4A No. 1 Cathedral on Monday, Mt. Vernon’s volleyball team bounced back on Tuesday to earn a 3-0 home win against Hamilton Heights.

The Marauders seemed to improve as the match went on, winning 25-14, 25-10, 25-11.

Sophomore Grace Hurst and senior Julia Wayer added 15 and 14 digs, respectively, in a great defensive effort, head coach Eric Bulmahn said. On offense, senior setter Ashton Barr added 14 assists and eight kills, while junior Meridan Eads finished with 15 assists.

Senior Jaclyn Bulmahn led the team with five aces.

Mt. Vernon will play again Saturday at the Cardinal Ritter Tournament. The Marauders open with Western Boone at 10 a.m.
